22. Making The Most Of Your Life (Vol2.No22.111025)

By Dream Internship

When you think of “College” you may find yourself painting an image in your head of wild parties, forgetting your small but not so insignificant scantron for a major test, or simply having the best time of your life. As college should be, “the best time of your life,” it is also the most important time of your life. It is the time that you must make a decision of where you want to go and who you want to be in 5 to 10 years. As I was reading the blogs on yahoo.com, some interesting facts came up about the reflection of college majors’ unemployment rates and the top 10 majors with the highest earnings. While reading these blogs, I couldn’t help myself but have the need to share this useful information to those that may or even may not be in the decision period of their life.

With a 10 percent unemployment rate, the top 6 selected are majors such as Actuarial Science, Astronomy and Astrophysics, Educational administration and supervision, geological and geophysical engineering, pharmacology, and school student counselling.

Majors with the highest earnings are dominated by Engineering, Pharmaceutical sciences, and Mathematics and computer sciences. From these articles, you can also find the lowest earning majors and the rest of the list of majors reflecting their unemployment rates. This isn’t to say that every other major that is out there isn’t promising because this is not true to say the least. Job security is very important but loving what you do is much more valuable.

With this being said, what is your major and what do you intend to do when you graduate? And the infamous question for a college student and/or grad, “are you going to grad school?” As I walked in for an interview for a graduate school program, my interviewee mentioned that times are changing fast. Having a Bachelors Degree was a very valuable key into receiving a desirable job 10 years ago but graduate schools are already seeing the transition of a Bachelors Degree being required and Masters and/or PhD preferred. This is something you must think about in your bachelor degree-days in order to mentally and physically prepare yourself for a great future!

No one ever said that picking the right major and the preparation for career hunting would be easy, but this is why you should not “judge each day by the harvest you reap, but by the seeds you plant,” a quote by Robert Louis Stevenson. Do not let one bad interview or rejection stop you from making your dreams come true because if you do, you will not allow yourself to reach your incredible potential.
