6. The Right Weapon for a Killer Job

6. The Right Weapon for a Killer Job

Being ignorant in your job hunt is like going to war without a strategy. Ask Napoleon Bonaparte whether or not he handed the rest of Europe a sloppy application asking them to hand over their pride and glory. Exactly. Finding a job in the 21st century is like finding a husband in a haystack (eh), yes, perhaps you’re looking in the wrong place?! But do not fear my friends; there are plenty of jobs out there. Did you btw know that most jobs are not advertised?

So, it was that strategy thing. It can take months to land a job and sometimes even years if you’re looking for the right one. And I guess as with the husband, you’re better off with the right one. In worst case scenario, you may end up with a temporary job, which is far better than the wrong guy…

It’s sad but true, it happens to most of us in life, don’t tell me you’re in a dream job right now…?!

The truth of the matter is that the next Picasso is out there. Among the thousands of wannabe Picassos, who will be the next to fill our intern gallery wall? Don’t get my analogy? That’s fair enough; I’ll throw some un warranted advice in face instead:

It’s a wild world out there, so get your guns out and paint the town red! Was that not a killer job I promised?

Now that you have realized that your degree is not a tool to get a job, perhaps you’re ready to wake up and smell the napalm?!

I don’t want to be blamed for identity theft, or even worse suggesting you’re not unique, but madre de gios tell me what you’ve got that makes you stand out in a crowd? A red hat? A bazooka? There are thousands people out there with exactly the same degree as yours. Just think of how many people you are graduating with this year and how many universities in this country alone: plenty. Oops, time for a strategy re-think.

Here’s a test: Imagine if you need to pick one man out of a hundred, or one hat, or one gun – and they all looked the same. Which one would you pick? (Especially if you hadn’t tried any of them yet!)

So here’s the powerful weapon of the weak: test it out!

Hm….well I’m not suggesting you sleep around, or go berserk at a shooting range, I’m suggesting you put yourself out there and let them see what you’re good for. Does it make you scared? (I almost felt like saying tough shit)

Ok, ok, I’ll get to the point, but I’ll round it up with Napoleon if you don’t mind: In a war between two powerful countries, who wins: the one with extra weapons or the one with the better strategy?!

Timing and action is crucial – it leads to victory. Most successful people in this world never use their degrees as weapons but they use it to make connections, think, and get to where they want to be. There’s no reason you should not be on top of the world: You just need a good plan and then you need to make it work.

Don’t wait, waiting is a mistake, before you even realize it, you have been officially unemployed for a year and still waiting for an opportunity. Another mistake is to go for anything available just because everything else seems so far away. Is that how you chose your men? Is that how you value yourself?

Avoid financial depression today and device a strategic plan of success!

No one ever said great things are easy to get, but you know what, it’s fun, and it’s a rewarding challenge you will chuckle about when you sit at your desk in a few months looking back on everything you have achieved.

An internship is not a dream job. It is a path way to a dream job (dream internship sound familiar?), a brilliant stepping stone, and the best strategy ever made that leads you to your dream job.

And I know what I’m talking about because I just got paid!
